Medicaid/CHIP Enrollment Drops by 5.1 Million Nationally

The latest data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) reveals significant shifts in Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) enrollment. As of July 2026, 72.9 million people were enrolled in Medicaid/CHIP nationally, with 65.7 million in Medicaid and 7.2 million in CHIP. These figures are based on monthly reports from states to CMS, updated to reflect resolved cases and changes in renewal metrics.

This tracker, part of the Performance Indicator Project, shows enrollment has declined by 5.1 million, or 7%, from July 2025 to July 2026. The data capture full-benefit enrollees but exclude those with limited benefits, such as family planning services only, and cannot monitor changes by eligibility pathway, including adults in the Medicaid expansion group.

Renewal Outcomes and Procedural Disenrollments

As of September 12, 2024, 69% of disenrolled individuals lost coverage for procedural reasons, such as incomplete paperwork, with rates varying based on calculation methods. High procedural disenrollment rates are concerning, as many may still qualify for Medicaid.

Future Enrollment Projections

Enrollment data for the full Medicaid population and more information on the impact of work requirements are available through the State Health Facts resource.

For 13 states, data were pulled from dashboards or reports published on state websites that provide more complete information, and for a few additional states, updated monthly reports were pulled from state websites because they were more timely than what is reported on the CMS website.
