Zimmer Biomet to Hire 500 in Bengaluru for AI Center

Zimmer Biomet, a U.S.-listed medical device manufacturer, plans to hire 500 employees in Bengaluru over the next three years as part of its expansion into a new technology center focused on artificial intelligence and medical technology innovation. The expansion highlights India’s growing significance as a global hub for healthcare technology development.

Expansion and Hiring Strategy

The new Bengaluru facility will function as a global capability centre (GCC), supporting Zimmer Biomet’s worldwide operations and product development efforts. The company, which produces orthopaedic implants and robotic-assisted surgical systems, stated that the hires will span software engineering, product design, research and development, quality, regulatory affairs, finance, and other business functions. Approximately two-thirds of the positions will be technology-focused, according to Jehanzeb Noor, Chief Strategy, Business Development, Innovation and Transformation Officer.

Noor indicated that the company is not constrained in its hiring plans and expects the Bengaluru workforce to eventually grow to thousands as the center expands. The new facility aims to serve as a strategic hub for accelerating innovation across Zimmer Biomet’s global network of musculoskeletal care technologies used in major markets including the United States, Europe, and Japan.

AI and Advanced Technology Focus

Artificial intelligence will be a central focus at the Bengaluru center, with teams developing technologies for robotics, surgical planning, software engineering, and research and development. Chief Information and Technology Officer Shaun Braun emphasized the company’s goal to assemble multidisciplinary teams to deliver new tools for surgeons, care teams, and patients. The integration of AI into medical devices is becoming standard practice across the healthcare industry, with applications ranging from improved surgical planning to enhanced robotic-assisted procedures.

The center’s development aligns with broader industry trends where medical technology companies are increasingly embedding AI capabilities into their product pipelines. This shift enables better analysis of clinical data, faster design and validation of new devices, and more sophisticated digital health solutions. Zimmer Biomet’s investment in Bengaluru reflects its strategic positioning within the evolving healthcare innovation ecosystem.

Broader Industry Trends in India

Zimmer Biomet’s expansion mirrors a wider movement of multinational healthcare firms establishing engineering and innovation operations in India. Other major players including Novo Nordisk, AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, Medtronic, and Philips have similarly opened or grown global capability centres in the country. These facilities typically handle software development, R&D, regulatory affairs, clinical data analysis, and digital health initiatives.

India’s appeal for such centers stems from its abundant talent in engineering, software, life sciences, and regulatory fields. Healthcare companies are increasingly assigning Indian teams to high-value activities beyond traditional support roles, including product innovation, cybersecurity, cloud engineering, and digital transformation. According to global capability centre consulting firm ANSR, revenue generated by India’s GCC sector is projected to reach $84 billion in the financial year ending 2026, representing annual growth of approximately 12%.

The Bengaluru expansion strengthens the city’s reputation as a leading healthcare technology hub, where multinational medical device makers, pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, and digital health startups are concentrating advanced research and engineering capabilities. For Zimmer Biomet, this investment supports the development of next-generation medical technologies while reinforcing India’s strategic role in its global innovation network. The convergence of medical devices, software engineering, robotics, and artificial intelligence represents a significant opportunity to improve patient outcomes and accelerate product development cycles.
